Tank with an eroding base

API 12 C tank sits on a compacted base. Over the years this compacted material was eroding from under the base plate projection. Tank has over its about 50 year life settled uniformly and there is a slight inward rotation of the shell at its base (angle from the vertical 1/4"hor. to 6" vert.). Owner hired a mason to grout the entire perimeter about three inches radially under the tank and 6" deep. We now have steel on grout. An API inspector which I am not, approved the procedure.

Two questions: 1) What problems to the tank, if any, could result with the grouting project 2) Should mastic material have been used to separate the steel projecting base from the grout?

By the way, any comment will not be used by me as a critic or praise about the API inspector's decision.

It is not uncommon to gout under a tank.

JFRs,
I've heard of gout in human limbs - especially when consuming too much port. Never heard of it associated with Tanks. Learn something everyday. I suppose it occurs in the elephant's foot on a Tank?
