Tainter gates hoisting system

Hello everybody:

In a technical paper I read that to hoist the radial gates (Tainter gates) of a project in New Zealand, the engineer decided to use a special rope, made of synthetic material instead of using wire rope hoist or chain hoist.

The special rope is Dynex, fabricated in Iceland.

I would like to know if someone on the Forum has had experience using this special type of rope or any of another brand in hoisting radial gates.

I would also like to hear your comments about the appropriateness or not to use this type of rope for this purpose.

Probably a polyester synthetic sling which is soft therefore would not mar the structure and would be pliable.

Know nothing at all about the application, but the rope sounds like High Modulus Polyethylene (constructed from Dyneema or Spectra fibres).

Things to remember about HMPE relative to most synthetic ropes you'll have encountered before:

It floats and has good resistance to water, oil acids, alkalis and UV - but heat resistance is poor.

Very strong for its weight

Very, very little stretch, which in turn means:

- Load sharing between multiple ropes can't be taken for granted (several instances of HMPE mooring ropes parting or pulling bollards out of jetties attributed to this)

- Little if any energy absorption in the rope - avoid dynamic loading like the plague, provide inline stretch somewhere else, or expect to see murderous shock loads throughout the whole system.

, Zeusfaber has it correctly, Polyethylene. Apparently it is very expensive and is used in the sail boating industry. Personally, for the intended construction project, I would use the more standard polyester synthetic fabric.
