I want to creat file that will hold all 40 versions of my 2 part assembly files (with different features in each). Is this possible?
Can I link a spreadsheet to assemble component 1 and component 2?

Yes, and no.

You can easily link a spreadsheet to part files, and link multiple parts to the same spreadsheet. BUT you can not use the spreadsheet to substitute one part for another.

You have a two part assembly (part A and Part B) you want to make 40 different versions of this assembly; Probably the first question is can you physically model Part A to create all the versions required by linking it to a spreadsheet? (same question for part B)

If all versions of Part A and all versions of Part B are similar enough to be able to make each part by linking to a spreadsheet, you should be able to derive the assembly and link the derived assembly to a spreadsheet (and get the results you are looking for).

Since it is only two parts, you might consider just modeling the assembly as a single part (not the best solution). Single parts are much simpler to link to a spreasheet than a derived assembly.
