I use the word 'tab' in relation to the runoff or starting tab of a weld, in the butt welding of two plates for instance. Stitch weld is a non continuous weld applied to one or both sides of a 'T' joint for example, a 2" weld every 6" would be a stitch weld. I presume the name came about from looking like a stitch done on a sewing machine...Mike
Last year I was involved in an European project called "ROBHAZ" - robotized underwater friction welding repair, where "stitch welding" is to force a rotating pin 8mm dia 60mm long into a 9 mm hole dia. to obtain a solid state friction weld. This is to be done in sequence of welds, spot to spot. Also your sewing machine was referred... Ing
