I use the word 'tab' in relation to the runoff or starting tab of a weld, in the butt welding of two plates for instance. Stitch weld is a non continuous weld applied to one or both sides of a 'T' joint for example, a 2" weld every 6" would be a stitch weld. I presume the name came about from looking like a stitch done on a sewing machine...Mike
