Ok everybody, got a real tricky one for you. When dragging different configurations of the same part in and out of sub-assemblies SW2007 randomly decides what configuration should be assigned to each part rather than the configuration that was selected in the main assembly. Has anybody had this issue or something similiar? Is there a solution or is my department's SW part directory completely hosed?

Unless you have discovered a new bug, it is not random. The configuration selected will be the one that the part was last saved as.

I'm using SP2.2 The funny thing is that in SW2006 we didn't have this issue. If a configuration was selected for a part in the top level assembly, then moved into a subassembly the configuration stayed selected. Now it does what CBL says, reverting back to the last saved confiuration instead of the one I chose prior. So far the only way we'ved figured out to solve it is to open the subassembly after the part is moved and reselect the configuration, then go back into the main assembly and make sure the configuration is still correct in the tree.

2007 seems to save differently when I save in my top-level assembly. I normally have lots of parts/subassemblies open, save my top-level assembly, and start shutting parts down. When I do, SW asks if I want to save the part? (I just DID that when I saved the top-level assembly!) I didn't see that in 2006. Perhaps there's a link between the two behaviors? It sounds like it.

I wonder why the change?

I noticed in the "What's New" PDF that SW has on the website that they removed the option "Use component's 'in use' or last saved configuration" and that legacy data will just use the named configuration that coresponds to the last used or saved configuration. That sounds like it shouldn't be an issue if I'm reading it correctly, yet here I am.

If anybody is curious.

If anybody happens to know of an easier way to do what I've described above I would really appreciate it if you could tell me. Seems like I have everybody stumped at the moment, but I promise if I come up with a better solution then I will post it imediately.

vacuumdesigner ... The full statement is;
SW2007 Whats New said:
In the Component Properties dialog box, the option to set the referenced configuration to Use component's in-use or last saved configuration has been eliminated. For legacy data, if this option was specified for a component, that component will be set to use the named configuration that corresponds to the "in-use" or last saved configuration.

So I take it that if that option was NOT specified, that the component will NOT do that. Did you specify that option for your configs? The default option is Use named configuration.

To be honest I can't remember, and since everybody here upgraded I can't go back and check now. I have a bad feeling it was set to use named configuration. But that sugge4sts to me that my configs should still work.

Can you get relief by right-clicking the subassembly/part and selecting Component Properties, and then selecting the configuration you want to use? I do this normally, but I don't know if this will channel down to apply to a part in your subassembly.

I have to choose the config I want to use in botht the sub assy and the main assy. Then and only then will everything stay put.
