SW2006 - Go back to old Select Other method?

Having just migrated to 2006 from 2004, I find the new Select Other tool to be incredibly slow (as well as the rest of the program). Is there any way to switch back to the original type of Select Other command?

Not that I know of. I have not noticed a slowdown and actually prefer the SW06 version.

Have you converted (to SW06 format) all the files you are working on before opening them?

Have you upgraded your video card driver?

Are your computer specs up to the task of running SW06?

SW 2006 definitely uses more resources--but it can do a great deal more with less hassle, too. I'm not using the same system I was using to run 2004 because the time waiting would no longer pay.

If you are using the same machine that you used to run SW04 your computer is probably out of date and the Video card and especially the drivers are out dated too. get you computer updated along with the drivers and see if you have the same issue.

But to answer your question no you cannot go back to the way it was.

Well, I know for sure the computers I've used both on are not completely up to date, but I really just have to work with what I've got. I really don't see what the issue is regarding processing resources, the program shouldn't be a whole hell of a lot more portly than it used to be, unless some programmer got extremely lazy (most likely the case, absolutely everything in SW is slower now).

Well, thanks for the answers regarding not being able to get back the old Select Other method... it's definitely a sad day, one I'll just have to live with.

The new "Select Other" takes some getting used to, but it's better in the end. You can keep right clicking on faces to hide them and directly select the face you want. 2007 enhanced it further by adding icons to help distinguish faces, edges, etc..

Well, it might be "better" for selecting faces if you're working on something extremely complex or if you're new to the program, but it's a LOT slower then the old method for power users like myself. I knew I had to RMB click once, then LMB click once on the menu, then click RMB ## times to hit the surface I want, then left click and I'm done. The new menu seriously causes me to lose 4-5 seconds each time I use it, not to mention unnecessarily displaying a list of the available surfaces from where you've clicked.

I can honestly say, the more "features" that SolidWorks has added over the years, the more more slowly I had to use the program. Granted, there are some nice features available in newer versions, but for all around ease of use for myself, SW2004 is the best. Too bad I can't convince my employer to downgrade. lol

I rarely use the RMB option to hide surfaces. I usually just drag the mouse pointer over the menu selections, then just left click when the surface I need to select gets highlighted.

Better to force convince your employer to upgrade your computer than to downgrade the software. [smile]

Have you done this? Basically (as I understand it) you (or a routine) needs to open and save every SW file.

When you right click on a face and "Select Other", the face disappears, then you left click select the face underneath ...same number of steps.

I've been using swx since 98 and I know what you mean about the old Solect Other tool....it broke my worflow when they changed it. But after learning the new tool...it's faster and easier.

If you think about it, they work about the same. Right click the area (new tool removes face), then you immediately left click to get the face underneath. If there many faces in the area, you right click (old tool cycles thru them, new tool hides them) You don't have to use the list which may be throwing people off.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I didn't realize what exactly that menu did, and how it hid faces now. You're pretty much right, it very well could be faster if my machine were up to par.

I've been told that a new machine is on it's way, so hopefully all of my performance issues will soon be put to bed (or at least buried until the next few versions come out that are even fatter, lol).

Yes, all our files have been converted or at least saved under SW2006 format... I'm the new employee here, they've all been using SW2006 a while, my old employer just had SW2004.
