SW crashes when assigning material, began after new DraftSight install

My SolidWorks (2012, SP2) began to crash when I try to assign a material to an object. It does it every time. This started after the latest version of DraftSight was installed in mid-November. This was an upgrade, I had DraftSight on there already and SW worked fine.

RE: 2012, SP2; my boss is an idiot. There's nothing I can do about it. He won't listen, you can't tell him anything. He'll say we must stay one SP behind, then when you point out the obvious, he changes his line to "we must stay one release behind". Then when you point out the obvious again, he launches into gibberish double-talk.

NOTE: Our IT Dept. did the DS upgrade, and I'm sure they just blew through it selecting any default options. There's no way they would read and research and try to make sure they understood how to do it best. They're IT guys, far superior to mere mortals and don't need advice from others.

Any ideas as to a fix on SW? When I select the material to assign to an object, SW goes dead briefly, then closes and gives me the error box "SW experienced a problem and had to close." (or something like that)

Was the upgrade using the disc, or using admin? I have run into this also with IT.
Find the disc. Turn off your anti-virus, run a repair from the disc.
Staying one SP behind is ignorant.

I have a couple of suggestions:
One, tell your boss his ignorance is causing lost productivity.
Two, involve your VAR.
Only one of the above is a good idea.

Thanks! I'll try to get IT to do a repair install. I doubt if they know what that is, or will bother to learn it, though.

Chris, the upgrade was done by IT over the internet, from company HQ.

Oh, wow, I was so lucky. My IT department was very happy to give up installation and maintenance of Solidworks. After I asked, they happily limited their participation to keeping the licenses current and circulating the DVDs. I miss that job in some ways.

Well, I passed along the advice to do a repair install. I guess IT didn't know how to do it and wouldn't bother to learn, so they convinced my idiot boss to allow everyone to get SP4. One guy has had it for a couple of months, but my idiot boss wouldn't let them upgrade everyone else.

That seems to have fixed the problem, the crashing when assigning a material did not occur after the SP4 install. However, DraftSight crashed today, for the first time since its upgrade, which was when the SW crashing began.
