I know there exists standards on the subject for ball bearings etc, but in the standards the safety factor is "baked" inside the formula. On a general basis, with a given geometry, is it possible to say something about a materials capacity in compression?

ASME VIII requires that the sum of the three primary principal stresses shall not exceed four times the allowable stress in tension.
Codes for structural steel limit the bearing pressure on the hole of a pin or bolt to something not far from 2.5 the allowable stress in tension, the bearing pressure being calculated on the hole diameter times the thickness.
