support for rooftop exhaust stacks

Typically, when the roof stacks gets too high, we provide either guy wires or steel frames to laterally brace the stacks. However, the roof stacks can also be designed to be self supported (cantilever off the roof steel) when they are not too high.

Could anyone offer a rule of thumb for such height limit? say 10 feet, 15 feet?

This is probably not the best forum for your question, as this forum tends to be devoted pretty much to the heat exchanger and thermo questions. Seeing that you're an experienced Eng-Tips user, you've probably have decided forum507 is not the best place to post your question. You might try forum403.
