Suitable material for gasket application

Hi all,

I'm a bit stumped on selecting a material for a gasket application with the following requirements:

1. Fireproof (in installation condition) according to AC 20.135
2. Compressible up to 30% of thickness without cracking
3. Thermal conductivity: 0.16 to 0.19 W/(m.K)
4. Maxiumum temperature: 535degC (995degF)

The closest material I've found is a variant of Thermiculite, but unfortunately these gaskets need to either be machinable or able to be layered up to 6mm thick. I know with Thermiculite they glue the layers together with Spraymount which isn't particularly suitable in the condtions required.

I am making a wild guess, but it sounds to me like you need a silicon rubber based compound. Maybe silicon reinforced with glass fibre or aramid pulp.

Thanks very much for your reply - I actually work for a silicone business and even the best compound is only good for around 320degC continuous use, even with fabric/pulp reinforcement.

What else than metal (stainless steel or similar) can withstand this temperature? I think that's the only possible direction you should follow.
 
Can the "gasket" requirement be met with a metal bellows and some non-resilient seals at the ends?
Provides sealing, flexibility and Hi temperature operation. Controlling thermal conducitvity ??
 
Unless you want to use asbestos I would take a look at a Silco Seal. Every place we have tested this gasket in process it has come through with flying colors. As with spiral wound gaskets you have to look at the oxidation potential of the process.

 
Unless you want to use asbestos I would take a look at the Selco Seal. Every palacw we tested this gasket it has passed whith flying colors. Just remember that as with spiral wound gaskets the oxidizing potential of the process material has to considered when selecting the filler.


Could you use a metal O-ring?
