Is there a standard description of sugar sand in terms of mineralogy, particle size distribution etc? I understand this term is probably colloquial rather than having a soil mechanics definition but any guidance would help.

"Sugar sand" is one of many variations of a Unified Classification System "SP", or poorly graded fine sand. Sugar sand is gap graded with a very steep grain size curve and few fines. It is also colloquially known as "ball bearing" sand. Much of the material passes a #60 sieve and typically 90 to 100 percent of the material is retained on a #200 sieve.
