Hi, I'm new here and maybe someone can help me

In an industrial effluent treatment plant they require the installation of a fire pump.

The client wants to use the large amount of water available as a fire reserve, but installing the pumping system to the common collector of the pumps that drives the water into the river.

The water treatment is continuous, so the process pumps are continuously running. The client wants to make an interlock where if the fire pump turns on, all process pumps turn off immediately.

Is there a code where this situation is contemplated or directly prohibited? It could be an acceptable installation? Thank you very much

Local codes are too basic and we are trying to find an answer in NFPA codes
 
The first think to do is check with your local water authority whether they allow a direct connection like this. If so, what are their requirements? Typically, in the USA you will find a backflow preventer somewhere where the write and red line meet but again only if allowed by the AHJ. Further, is the water supply reliable 24/7/365 and adequate to meet this demand plus any future that may be under a minimum positive residual pressure?

You could also check NFPA 1 & 20 and the IFC for further information about water supplies.
