Dear Experts,

I have been advised to check the lateral capacity of pile (Bored cast in site) in clay. Wherein skin of the pile is attached with Styroform material of 4inch(100mm) thick.

What would be the reduction of lateral resistance due to interaction between styroform and soil stiffness.

Regards
Bala

How has the side of the pile be surrounded by styrofoam? I presume there has been some styrofoam installed as lightweight fill and the pile has been bored through it?

Can you upload a sketch?!

Looks like the Styrofoam may be for thermal insulation to me.

As for the lateral capacity, Geofoam has quite good properties, depending on the lateral pressures noted. See the attached table.

Looks like a combination of a footing with a poured "pile" combination. Most of these materials can take considerable compression load without much deflection. I'd consider it as solid material similar to dense soil.

Thanks,

Just to understand the loads coming on to the pile, We have 3.5 tons lateral load and 2.5 tones compression and Uplift. No moment.

Few that in the industry that, the styroform area cannot eligible to provide lateral resistance. is it correct? should i ignore the lateral resistance for form area?

Bala

The styrofoam appears to be located within a 1m of ground level. Is it to act as a cushion for uplift pressures from swelling soil?

Regardless, often with lateral capacity the support from the upper 1-2m is ignored. I would only take the support provided from 2m below ground level
