Structural Work with Variety

Morning Everyone

Is there a structural engineering work that has more variety? For example, is there anything in structural engineering where you can possible inspection work and design work or something that gets you involved in doing building and bridge design work? Doing pharmaceutical design and structural inspection? In almost every job that I have gotten into, the employer has used me to specialize in one thing and one thing only.

Thanks

Calif

Work for a small firm. The jobs will be smaller, but in my experience more varied. On the downside you might be answering phones, filing documents, and taking out your own trash. I don't see a lot of crossover between bridges and buildings though.

I work for a small firm.LOL They have me do one specific things. I am just trying to find something which I am not pigeon holed as he is good at doing this one thing.

Hi,

It's my experience that getting pigeon holed is self inflicted. Sounds to me like you get bored easily :)

Becoming specialized is not so bad, its how consultants are born.

It is not self inflicted if you continue to seek jobs that do one thing and one thing only. I am looking for something that has me outside as well as inside doing work. I do not want to become a one-sided engineer. Maybe I should get into infrastructure but I do not know what I can do in that which is related to structural engineering.

Its a shame bridges, dams and similar infrastructure don't need structural folks to help design them.

Posting guidelines faq731-376 (probably not aimed specifically at you)

Yes - small firm is the answer - but of course: the right small firm.

Sounds like you are in the wrong type of small firm.

Maybe but I am just trying to find something in which I can learn structural design yet, I can get out of the chair sometimes and do work as well. Like maybe, inspecting something, I do not know.

State DOT. They design stuff, they build stuff, they inspect stuff, and they often have a job-training rotation program for young engineers.

It'll all be bridges, but it'll be different kinds of bridges and different phases in the life of the bridges if you can rotate.

Hi Hg

Is there anything similar to that but involves buildings? Or tunnels?
