Structural Notes & Typical details

Hi, I am preparing to start my own structural company...or more like one man show and I have a few questions concerning drawing specifications.

I need to develop a set of Structural notes and typical details for plan submittals but besides copying my current employers notes and re wording them(which I will not do) I am not sure what should be included in the Structural Notes. Obviously I would include basic information about each of the materials that are being used on a project, but what else should be included in the Structural notes?

Same question about the typical details. Is there an open source resource where a person might find that information?

The codes and design loads used, to include wind and seismic as well as gravity loads, plus reference to any geotechnical reports, listing the firm, date and associated design parmeters from the report.

You will also need a miscellaneous section that will include, but not be limited to, the contractor's requirement to field verify all measurements.

A while back I bought "Structural Details Manual" by David Williams. It has a lot of typical details and all the general notes you'll ever need. I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I suspect that if you buy his book, you have rights to use the details contained inside.
It might be a little out of date (I remember a lot of SBC references), but it would definitely give you a good start.

I would think of what is important enough in the specifications book that it warrants being repeated on the plans, since specs books are often lost. Delegated engineering requirements, special inspection notes, material specs for everything, fastener notes, notes that this is the final design, temporary stability/shoring is by the contractor, do not scale drawings, abbreviations...

Attached is what I used, back in the day, as a start. Modify it as needed and I'm not responsible if things are incorrect or spelled wrong or outdated, etc.

The Williams detail book also has great typical details you can CAD up yourself. Architectural Graphics Standard is another great resource, and I believe the newer copies come with a CD of details.

You can find lots of decent typical details on the websites of trade organizations like National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), American Wood Council, and manufacturers such as iLevel-Weyerhauser, Dietrich, Simpson Strong Tie, etc..
