I am going to make some shafts to mount the rod end of a hydraulic cylinder to. The shaft (red) will only be .75" diameter and increasing in diameter to 1 1/2 with generous radii. I will then light press into the large shaft (pink) and retain with a roll or taper pin, crossdrilled in the pink shaft. I want to make this shaft out of something that will handle a cylinder push force that could be 6,000 lbf. What would be the best material, and would heat treat increase the max. yield of that material. Failure of this pin could cause serious problems.
pondering any of these, but can be different, 4340, 4140, 1045, fatigue proof, stress proof, A2, D2, 8620, ETD-150, etc.
