Stress linearization method 3

Good day,

I am currently developing a stress analysis for a clamp validation. This clamp will be in a high pipe line installation .While looking in a similar analysis I found that because the stresses were really high in some regions, they used stress linearization on that zone.

But I would like to know a more deep explanation of this method and in what cases does it apply.

Suggest the following places to start your understanding of stress linearisation:

1. eng-tips, linearisation has been discussed many times, specifically in the "Boiler and Pressure Vessel engineering" forum;
2. Part 5 and Annex 5-A of ASME Section VIII Division 2;
3. WRC 429;
4. Do some examples using both shell and solid elements.

If you are using stress linearization to demonstrate Protection Against Plastic Collapse, then may I humbly suggest that this is a very very bad idea. It is much better to use an Elastic-Plastic method using LRFD. There are simply far too many simplifications and assumptions in elastic analysis - especially for complex geometry such as a clamp connection. Save yourself some heartburn and learn the modern methods.

Can you please tell me why is a bad a idea to employ the linearization of stresses for a V-clamp?

What is the Elastic-Plastic method (using LRFD)?

I am also concern for creep deformation, I was about to compare the linearized stress with the required creep to produce 1% strain.

I really appreciate your time.
 
I'm going to give you the same advice that I've provided countless others who were in your situation: you are unqualified to be performing this type of work. Find a mentor. Hire a specialist.
