Can any one guide me to analytical formulas calculating vertical stress distribution in soil underlined by a conceret slab over which a surface load (like traffic) is applied.
Or formulas to calculate vertical stress in soil under a rigid pavement slab
Thanks

"Elastic Solutions for Soil and Rock Mechanics" by Poulos and Davis. I hear that it is available free on line now.

"Principles of Pavement Design" by E. J. Yoder, various editions

You can always conservatively assume a 2V:1H stress distribution. Wheel loads generally only extend about 5 feet below the ground surface.

The book cited by aeoliantexan is the classical reference, I confirm it's available for free in the public domain.

A very good paper, with practical instructions to build up a spreadsheet, is the following:

Mayne, P.W. and Poulos, H.G. (1999). Approximate displacement influence factors for elastic shallow foundations. ASCE
Journal of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering 125 (6), 453-460

AASHTO has equations.
It does depend on the reinforcement and thickness of the concrete slab/pavement structure (your DOT may not account for that though).

I'm studying the horizontl component of this question right now. Somethings are not as easy as they seem. . .

Why not look into Yoder's book "Principals of Pavement Design" - good book for pavements including rigid.

Thanks for your reply. Basically rigid pavement books provide the bending moments, stresses, and shear at different locations in the slab itself.
What I am interested in is the Vertical stress distribution in the soil under a concrete square or strip raft loaded with distributed square load or point/concentrated load on the surface.
I have looked in AASHTO but was not able to find any related formula , charts, or guidelines on this matter.
Thank you

So what you really want is the stress distribution under a "rigid" foundation. Chapter 7 or Poulos and Davis.
