Strange wood I-Joist manufacturer

Hi,

I am currently working on a project for an existing building which has Sturdi-web by Pelican I-joists. I had never heard of this brand before. Upon doing some research I discovered that this product (or at the very least the OSB web) may have been manufactured by Pelican Spruce Mills, and the line of products is "Sturdi Wood". Apparently Pelican Spruce Mills was based in Canada and bought out by Weyerhauser in 1987. I am trying to get access to some technical information about these I-joists such that I can check them for loading and deflection conditions.

Has anyone heard of this company before? I have contacted Weyerhauser to get some additional info but no luck yet. Please see attached photos for on-site conditions.

Did you email Weyerhauser, or call? I always call, ask for the technical person who's been there the longest, and usually get a fast answer.

Heres the response I got from one guy at Weyerhauser:

"Unfortunately, we don't have info on those joists.
Weyerhaeuser just supplied the web stock and not the I joist itself.
I good responsible method is to look at our older attached code report and find a joist with similar flange sizes in solid sawn material, and web thickness...and use those joist properties to compare to these joists."

is that bottom chord essentially 1 and 1/2 laminations of 2x4 flat, ie, about 2.25 total thickness x 3.5" width?

It's actually 2.5" thickness by 3.5" width, but yeah close...

if correct, I'd guess that you are in California or nearby, and I'd bet this was produced by standard structures, santa rosa, ca

Pelican is a plywood/osb mill and, to the best of my knowledge, just produced sheathing which they would sell to various IJoist fabricators, but produced no IJoists themselves

I'm not sure if they are glued-laminated, but you are definitely right I work in Southern California. Im suspecting you're right about the glulam part... do these guys have any product data? I did a search online but found nothing really...

2.5" thick bottom chord indicates maybe not a match
2.5" at top chord may be explained by sec 3.2.1.1

What makes you think these are SSI joists? Isn't the brand name Spruce Mills? Is SSI somehow affiliated?

please understand that i'm not trying to convince you, just making a suggestion trying to be helpful,

my reasons,
1. the stamp for pelican is on the web sheathing, and, I think, pelican did not make ijoists but simply supplied the sheathing material to an ijoist manufacturer. this sees to align with weyerhauser's reply to you above. but, I could be wrong. you could probably verify this by contacting apa whose stamp is also on the web sheathing.
2. SSI was a significant supplier in California until they closed a few years ago
3. the bottom flange appears to be glulam and, I don't know of any other ijoist manufacturer who supplied ijoists with glulam flanges

but,
you there is a discrepancy in dimensions as noted in above posts; but I supplied a possible solution which you'll have to field verify
namely, there is a configuration of ssi joist with 2.5x3.5 top chord and 2.125x3.5 bottom chord.

if the dimensions do not match, then, i'd think it is not an ssi joist.

I just checked the (blurry) drawings and I have to take back what I said. bottom chord is 2.25" while top chord is 2.5"...

Ive been looking through the SSI report and there are two possible ones, the SSI43MX and the SSI 43MH... Any way to guess which one of these?
