Storage Tank Takeoffs

Hey everyone,

I just started an internship with an industrial construction company that specializes in design, fabrication and installation of API and ASME storage tanks, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips/advice on the processes to go about learning how to do a simple takeoff when looking at plans for a 30'x20' 2-course (Material: A-36) storage tank. I'm a Junior at LSU in Construction Management specializing in Industrial Engineering, and am trying to get my feet wet, and I figured this would be a good place to start for advice.

You might want to check on this.
I think the width of each courses on a standard API Tank are 8'-o" high. This would mean that you would have three courses and would be advised to standardize the height of your tank at 24'-o" instead of 20'-o". If you really want just 20'-o" then you will have a lot of trimming and a lot of waste to dispose of.

The plate material you need would be 30'-0" times 3.1416 (for each course) times the 3 courses.

Does the API require floor plates, or rest/seal directly onto the flat concrete pad for low pressure storage tanks?

Add a few nozzles, manways, cover plates, nuts, bolt/studs. gaskets, vent pipes ...

A good start to doing take-offs is to ask yourself "what pieces are required to build this?" If you were building a car, those things might be wheels, tires, engine, transmission, steering wheel, etc. For building a tank, you will at the very minimum require a shell and a floor. Learning to layout these items is a skill which can take years to master, but you must start somewhere. Some considerations include the fabrication abilities of your firm and shipping of the fabricated material.

Become familiar with all of the pieces & parts.....know the different types of roofs/ nozzles/manways etc.

Then develop a spreadsheet....
