A globe valve can have a number of configutations, but a globe-stop valve is designed with a wiggly disc that nests into the seating surface, resulting in tighter shutoff. By "wiggly disc" I mean that the disc is attached to the end of the stem in a way that it has some freedom to deflect. These valves, like gate valves, are suitable for full-open or full-closed, but must never be used for throttling. In intermediate (throttling) positions, the wiggly connection wears as it is rattled by process turbulence, and the valve may suffer failure that not only renders it noonfunctional, but the pieces may damage downstream equipment.
