Does anyone know of a program that will convert an stl file to a solid like an iges or step file? Thanks

Rhino can do it www.rhino3d.com

I think polytrans can do it as well with some additional plug-ins www.okino.com

Rhino says no easy way and okino says no but thanks for the try. Looks like Geomagic Studio is the way to go....anyone willing to convert a file for me? Thanks

The "science" of converting point cloud or polygonal data to NURBS patches (to eventually end up with a solid model) is called Reverse Engineering (RE). You can google the term for finding more information.

PTC has a RE module available (www.ptc.com/appserver/mkt/products/home.jsp?&k=870). I had a demo of it and was quite impressed with its speed.

Other top of the line apps include RapidForm, Geomagic Studio, PolyWorks, Metris's Focus Reverse Engineering (ex Paraform product), etc.

A quite complete list of RE apps is available at www.tenlinks.com/CAD/products/reverse_eng.htm
