Stepped Footing Detail 1

Hi,

I keep seeing essentially the same detail for a stepped strip footing which indicates for a vertical step of x, there needs to be a horizontal component of 2x. Shouldn't there be a limit how much of a step you can have. And having said that, how would you treat a strip footing on a hillside that is steeper than 1(V):2(H)

Earlier in my career, I limited footing steps to 2'-0" high by 4'-0" long. But I have sinced relaxed my standard and have allowed a 4'-0" step on occasion. The important thing, if you decide to do something unusual, is to justify what you are doing. With a taller or steeper step arrangement, the upper footing may put load into the lower footing, and this should be checked.

I have encouraged steps in residential construction to be limited to 4' to 5' high for each step. I also encourage the hor:vert proportions given by DaveAtkins. Of course, some sites require steeper grade changes and that is where the fun begins.

This also encourages some thought as to how the site grading/landscaping will be handled. Moderately high retaining walls (6' to 10') tend to create longterm problems for future owners.
