Quick question: If I am using the resisting system "steel systems not specifically detailed for seismic resistance..." (R = 3 and SDC = C) does this allow me not to have to check for seismic connections (ie. E1.6B, for web plates)? I believe this to be the case, but wanted to double check and make sure I am not missing something. I believe this is the intent of using this resisting system...a bit higher forces, but savings on the connections. Thank you and have a great day.

You have to check your connections for the seismic forces and detail them according to table 12.2-1, which for 'Steel System not Specifically Detailed for seismic' says detailing requirements are in 14.1.

Then in 14.1.2.2.1 It says if you use an R factor from Table 12.2-1 and are in SDC B or C then you detail per AISC 341.

The exception is for 'Steel System not Specifically Detailed for seismic' that says you can detail per aisc 360 alone.

I don't know exactly what you mean by 'Seismic Connections' but I believe your referring to detailing requirements per AISC 341 vs AISC 360.

If detailing for AISC 360 you simply take the design forces from the seismic analysis and design the connections for those forces. So you get out of needed special detailing and developing overstrength or capacity limited forces in the connections.

Sorry, I am referring to the checks for E1.6b in the AISC 341 specifically for the web stiffeners and web plates. My thinking is I do not have to apply 341 if I am using steel systems not specifically detailed for seismic.

As noted above if you meet the criteria and use an R=3 you are exempt from all AISC 341 provisions.
