Steel Silo 1

I am looking for building code or design standards for steel shell silo design in the USA.

I found European standards (EN 1993-1-6 and EN 1993-4-1), but haven't found any US codes/standards yet.

Any help would be appreciated

I am evaluating a three existing silos. The best references I have found are

"Design of Steel Bins for Stroage of Bulk Solids" by Charles Gaylord. This book was not very easy to find (out of print).

"Guide for the Economic Design of Circular Metal Silos" by J.M. Rotter. This one can be purchased in Kindle format or Mobipocket. Neither of these readers are great for a technical book since the figures and tables do not re-size when you zoom. I found a couple of key tables are very hard to read, but I am making do.

I believe the only standard is the European one. I am in Canada, and I know we do not have our own. Maybe you do in the US? There are a lot of recommendations and study discussions in the book by Charles Gaylord, but this is by no means an exact science. The european guidelines seem the most well defined.

By John R. Buzak..published by AISI

also "DESIGN OF PLATE STRUCURES"....published by AISI

The following available from LINCOLN ARC WELDING FOUNDATION
or LINCOLN ELECTRIC.
They have some really usefull and practical design books
available, especially by Omer W. Blodgett, and very reasonable in price. This man has left a treasure trove of
designs in steel and welding.

There is not an American standard. Typically, the tank standards from AWWA or API are used for allowable stresses, seismic loading is from ASCE 7, design methods and loading from the references above.

Try checking with a US supplier of the type of silo you are looking at. They should be able to tell you what design standards they follow.
