What are some rules of economy you use for steel joist roofs? Maximize spacing? Use heavier joist to eliminate special bridging requirements?

I follow the manuf. recommendations for economy. A company like Vicwest has done several tables up for different loadings and most economic joists.

Start with the depth (in) equal to approx 0.7 times the span (ft). For eg. a 30' span would have a most economical depth of about 0.7 x 30' = 21" say 22"...
