does anyone know the ramifications of using a steel erector that is not certified by AISC, specifically does not have a "CSE"...
in this case the steel fabricator is also doing the field steel erection.....
thanks for any insights...

The certified erectors are always good. The uncertified ones are hit or miss. Some are very good, some are mom and pop (and idiot son), "out of the garage" operations.
The problem is, unless your job is pretty large, it's hard to impose the certification on the General Contractor. The AISC certified shops are typically pretty big, but if your job is small, it's hard to get their attention.
We have it in our specifications, but typically don't enforce it.

Thanks for the post, and I actually work for AISC Certification (Manager of Business Development). If you have more questions/comments about the AISC Certification Program, please feel free to contact me directly at 312.670.7527 or alwood@asic.org - or you can find additional information at Thanks!
