I am designing steel tube columns with steel tube beam. It is not a moment frame. Only for supporting vertical loads.
When is better to weld the beam on side of the column and when is it better on top of the column?

If it is a one story building, then I think it is easier to set the beam on top of the columns. The connection requires lesser prep and installation time.

Welding on the side will need a knife plate connection or a seated connection. Setting on top will only need a cap plate.

i have been told also that beam on top of column is easier for construction. in my industry (refinery plant) though, this may not be a good idea as we need to add new levels of platform in the future, etc.. so column extending 2 feet above is better.

steel tube sounds easier for nailers attachment on sides of the beam.

Why are all steel moment frames constructed the way beam on side of the column? i think it would transfer the moment even if the beam is set on top of the column over the end plate....

A steel WF would be my choice and I would bolts it to a column cap plate. Stiffeners are required within the beam over the column for stability and this would also permit upward extension of the column.

Alternatively, if there is a good chance of upward extension, you could extend the column slightly above the top of beam and use a single or double angle connection to the beam web. You would still need a cap plate to attach the future column extension.

who told you all steel frames are constructed with beam on the side.

while it is common practice specially in my industry, i have some existing here where beam is on top of column moment connected because column extension can be tripping hazard for top platform.

simpson strongtie and hardy frames offer only moment frames with beam welded on side of the columns.....
