Hi, I'm hoping to get some advice. I am enlarging a window to 1840mm to accommodate a bifold door on the ground floor of a 4 storey Victorian two skin property. Is a 100mm x 100mm x 5mm mild steel box section be strong enough as an internal lintel spring the floor joists. I can't fit a larger u beam due to space as there is a bay window and wall plate. Thanks in advance

It certainly sounds a little skinny, but then I don't know the loads or the deflections as you didn't say.

Typically if supporting brickwork you'd want span/600 or similar which would most likely mean strength wouldn't be an issue.

If you are an engineer...simply calculate the properties and loads and determine the strength vs. required strength. Check deflections.
If you aren't - go hire one. :-)
