Steam turbine performance testing

Hi,

As per API 611 steam turbine (applied for boiler feedwater pump in refinery service), it is noted that performance testing is listed as an Optional test with a note that such test is usually not carried out for such equipment.

Can anybody advise as to why it is not usual practice.

It's too small compared to the rest of the plant so, unless it is obvious something wrong is happening, there is not much to be gained with an improvement in it's efficiency. Most modern combined cycle plants use electric motors instead of steam turbines for the BFWP, it is much easier, cleaner and cheaper to run medium voltage cables than steam pipes (those turbines are typically non-condensing)

Are you sure that most CCPP do not have condensing steam turbines? I'm used to them having condensers. Can you please explain?

Auxiliary drives are often non-condensing HP-IP, IP-LP, or HP-LP machines, but the main generator drives are always condensing machines. Steam turbine driven auxiliary drives are more common in older coal-fired plant than in CCGT stations where auxiliaries are almost always electric.

Locally, we have a utility company that has several gas fired turbine-generator sets. Their POC is directed to a saturated steam WT boiler which has a saturated steam turbine for feed water.
 
I am from power plant field, without much experience in petroleum industry.

I think the main reason is the purpose of the turbine. The performance testing is basically related to efficiency of the machine. Whereas I do not say that turbine efficiency is not important for petroleum industry, reliability may have more priority therein(which can be established by mechanical testing and other testing at shop). However, it will be a good idea to do performance testing of drive turbines also. It may be noted that usually performance testing of BFP turbines are done in power plants along with main turbine cycle performance testing.
