Stator Frame Sizes 3

I am new to stator frame sizes. What does the number 56, 48 or 34 'Frame Size' signify in electrical terminology.

The number for the frame is linked to a standarized set of dimensions that make posible interchange of same frame size motors from different manufacturers.

For motors manufactured under NEMA standards and starting with 14 (143T,145T etc) to frame sizes 50 (504, 505, etc). The first two digigts are the center shaft height to the motor feet given in 4ths of an inch.

145T => shaft height=14/4 =3.5"
184T => shaft height=18/4 =4.5"
445T => shaft height=44/4 =11"
etc.

Outside the US frames are to IEC standards, the frame size is given in mm and is measured as NEMA (shaft centre to bottom of feet), for comparison of IEC and NEMA see:
