Hi Folks,
I just wanted to know the basic function of stamping a part in sheetmetal.Does it add the strength to the part? I know it is a simple question. But it would be great if you can guide a beginner.Awaiting your positive replies.

Thank you Keith.Any idea on how does it add strength to the part?

Whenever you bend a part you increase it's cross-section which makes it stiffer - considerably stiffer. Also, it work-hardens the metal by stretching it, that alone, also stiffens the part. Car bodies often have kinks and ridges stamped into them specifically to allow them to be made from thinner (less expensive) material.
