We are designing a ‘stacked’ pair of horizontal vessels whereby one vessel sits on top of another.
The vessels will have saddle type supports and the supports for the upper vessel will be in-line with the lower vessel supports.
The lower vessel will therefore have wrapper plates welded on the underside of the shell and then also wrapper plates welded on the upper side of the shell at the same longitudinal position.
We are considering rather than have 2 wrapper plates welded to the lower shell, instead having a rolled and welded ‘band’ which wraps around the full circumference to the shell. This would be attached to the shell by 2 circumferential fillet welds.
Has anybody ever seen this type of compensation before and do you think it would be OK (from a calculation point of view) to consider the band as 2 wrapper plates ?
