I have two samples that I have taken micrographs of under 100X magnification. One sample is thought to be SS T-301 and the other is a sample of an [unknown] brass bearing case. I would like to compare my micrographs with other micrographs to determine exactly what type of brass and SS I am working with using the grain structure as my basis. Is there a website or other source with free images I can use?

I will try to upload my images for you to see what I am working with and if you know the type of brass please let me know!

Thanks in advance.

It is practically impossible to identify a material from a photomicrograph. Depending on sample preparation, etching conditions, and other factors, the same material can exhibit grossly different images.

While the ASM Metals Handbook has an atlas of microstructures, I am not aware of any free or on-line version of this.

In addition to the microstructure, you really need to know the chemical composition and possibly the hardness or mechanical properties in order to properly document the material. The two photomicrographs that you uploaded appear to be of a brass and an austenitic stainless steel, but nothing more definitive can be stated. The best free website that I have found for micrographs is the following:

Clicking on Material Card Index and then Material Index will get you to this page:

Type 301 is equivalent to the European designation X12CrNi17-7 or X10CrNi18-8 (1.4310).

Don't speculate using only photomicrographs, there is too much risk involved. You should send samples to a met lab and have results provided.

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread. I appreciate it. My question has been resolved.
