Hi Folks,

I have a compression spring that has been affect by heat.

Is it correct to say that the spring has been "distempered" or is it more correct to say "de-tempered"?

I would appreciate your comments.

Regards,

My personal view is that it is correct to say “de-tempered”, but I’ve had a conflicting opinion. Hence I want to check.

I think Distemper is a disease (that might apply though)

I would say, "the spring lost it's temper."

I think Distemper is a disease common in dogs. :-)

Depending on the time/temperature it has experienced I think the correct terms may be annealed, normalized, or stress relieved.

It depends on the type of spring wire used.If a tempered wire product was used (e.g.oil tempered or chrome silicon) then Carburize's description is spot on. But, if the wire was music wire, stainless or something else, then some other term might be more appropriate.

How about overheated? Unless the temperature was in excess of ~ 650 C, then annealed does not apply. If the temperature did not exceed the A3 temperature (> 730 C), then normalized does not apply.
