Is there a stainless steel (round) that can be hardened to Rockwell C 45 - 50 that can remain corrosion resistant to a 200 hour salt fog spray. I need need it that hard( at least the surface) because curved stainless springs will be wrapped on it and rotating on its surface.
Nickel plating steel won't do, it always breaks down under the pressure of the springs.
Any help is appreciated.

Where the 200 hour salt fog came from? Usually it is 2 hours for a passivated stainless steels?

You could use thick hard chrome electroplating or plasma sprayed ceramic or chrome coating.

My initial thoughts are similar to israelkk's-- investigate a harder coating like hard chrome, thermal spray tungsten carbide, or tool coatings like TiN, TiAlN, etc.

Look at PH grades, 17-7, 17-4, 15-5, Custom 455 and so on.
They will harden to pretty good values, over 40Rc is common. You can go harder, but you loose a lot of ductility.

You may be having coatings fail becuse they are no supported well enough. You could look at using a duplex grade (2205, 2101, 2003) and then plating that.

From the minimal information in your post I assume that you are planing a Wrap Spring Clutch/break. If I am correct and your spring is made of stainless steel then to avoid galling and excessive wear of the spring and the shaft, non of the PH alloys or even 440C will fit. You will need a wear resistant coating.
