split a surface?

Whats the best way to split a surface. eg If ive got say a square surface and i want to split it into 2 independant surfaces. I have been experimenting with slice but having no luck.

I often use asbw and lina. With asbw you only have to align the working plane (see wprota and wpoffs) to define the slice plane. With lina you must define 2 key points and one line.
