Spline length control

Is there any way to constrain the length of a spline? I know I can get a static measurement but I want to force the spline to retain its length while I make changes to other geometry. I haven't been able to find a way to do it.

Or - can you think of a workaround that would let me get the spline length close to a fixed value?
