I would like some formulae for estimating loads produced by a 1:1 mitre bevel gear. I have read texts that give data for straight cut bevels but am interested in what effect if any the spirol has.

The spiral has a considerable effect on the loads in most cases. I would suggest you get hold of AGMA 2005-B88 (Design Manual for Spiral Bevel Gears), and study section 14. I think this will tell you everything you need to know (a bit too much to reproduce here).

Thanks - I will check out the AGMA document.
