I had this exact error on two different machines. I worked with SW tech support for 3 days trying to resolve the issue. One of the things we tried is what's explained in CBL's post above. Unfortunately nothing worked and the only solution I came up with was not to upgrage to the next SP.

I even totally wiped SW fromt the machine, cleaned the registry and tried installing from 0 and it wouldn't work. I had to do a roll back (restore)of the entire machine to a state when SW was installed an working to get the software back.

SW's final suggestion to me was a reformat of the hardrive and total re-install of the OS. In my mind this is not a good solution.

Good luck.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, reformatting my drive isn't exactly what I had in mind for a minor SW update. If it would at least prompt me for that file instead of simply saying it cannot find it, I'm sure I could figure out a handy hack (like the old days of installing SPs). But this error doesn't give me anywhere to go.

Maybe the next step is to call my VAR. I seem to get errors/bugs only when I've used up a fair amount of RAM--then weird things happen, like program hangs, non-display of the viewport, "failure to save", etc. with assemblies. But I've been up in this range of RAM usage before without these issues--seems like something became corrupted. (I've 3GB of RAM, using the /3GB switch.)

Jeff,
Do you not have the DVD versus CDs? I realize that I'm probably grasping at straws here, but perhaps that would work? Maybe your VAR could get you an SP4.0 DVD to replace your CDs...just a thought.

Thanks, Jeff--you know, I was looking for that yesterday and then thought maybe I'd imagined installing from DVD. (That could be the problem.) I'll have to try that out and see what happens--but that could explain the hang-up, since I'm quite sure I installed from DVD.

This happened for me on both the CD and DVD.

I forgot this in the first post but one of the machines finally allowed me load the software if I logged on as a different user, even though both users were administrators.

(Mine, too.)

Hey, I got the SW (core) part of the install to work with the DVD. Now working on the other bits. Might be almost there. ..

Got eDrawings updated, but the others keep failing (Explorer and DWGEditor). Not going to bother with those, since I'm now out of time--we'll see if this update improves stability like I'd hoped.

When you have time to fight with it again, maybe try an administrative install.

Eric

It might separate the copy from DVD operation from the install operation, and get around the mysterious access issue. It's a long shot, but sometime when what should work doesn't, what shouldn't work does.

I Jeff

If I understand you, the installation was aborted by an error during the process.

I have had a similar error (in another release of SW). A "normal" unistall and reinstall with "normal" registry cleaning didn't work. After several atempts, where is what I've done:
- uninstall SW
- deep cleaning of registry cleaning (all SW keys I could find were deleted)
- new install with latest SP

It was a success.

Good Luck

I may need to do that if I want to get SW 2007 current. I'm running it now with what did update (core SW and eDrawings and Help files) and will see if my bug problems are any better. If so, I'll probably leave it until I'm using mainstream 2008 (with stable SP). Installing 2008, I might try the admin image Eric mentioned above.

Thanks!

Thanks--I might do that. I hardly use it, so the SP2.0 version I've already got will probably do the trick until I'm well into SW 2008 or so. So far, so stable (again).
