SolidWorks 2005 and Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise

I'm using SolidWorks 2005 and Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise on the same machine. They're not getting along. I have these problems:

-In Windows Explorer views of folders containing SolidWorks part/assy/drawing files, the thumbnail icons appear very slowly... one at a time, down the list.

-opening assemblies and drawings is slow.

I believe the cause of both issues above is that VirusScan is scanning each file (or referenced file) as it opens. I was able to shut down VirusScan, and doing so made both of these issues disappear, so I know that's what it is.

Our IT guy spent some time turning off scans for different file types, including .sldprt, .sldasm, and .slddrw--none of which had any affect (still slow). He toyed with a lot of settings, but the only thing that made any difference was shutting down VirusScan altogether.

I HAVE to have VirusScan on my computer--it's policy. There's got to be a way to configure it so it leaves SW files alone?? I'm hoping somebody has been through this and might be able to provide some assistance or advice. Yes?

Notes:

-tried disabling on-access scan (that seemed to be the obvious problem, as it scans files as they're accessed)-that did not change anything.

-IT guy blocked SolidWorks file types from on-access scan, but that also had no effect.

-I have contacted my VAR about this... we erroneously thought we fixed this, but I was mistaken. I plan on contacting them again... I asked here because of the possibility of a similar problem among such a large group of users. I was hoping to have more ideas when I get back in touch with them.

A couple of things you might try.

1. Don't show the snap-shot icons for your parts/assemblies, but show them as a detailed list for Explorer. McAfee might be using the new JPEG virus scanning thing which makes something slow even slower.

2. Ditch McAfee and move to some other form of virus scanning--perhaps a non-enterprise stand-alone. I've got nearly the same set-up as you do, but with a 64-bit AMD chip and am using Norton Internet Security 2005. Very fast, no hang-ups.

3. Double-check the worm/scripts settings within McAfee. When I ran McAfee, it would flag SW every time I opened it because of a feedback script (I think) that SW would send to headquarters on opening. So something is getting looked at by McAfee on every application launch that had to do with scripts.

We have the same problem here with McAfee. Our IT is looking into it as well, but so far nothing. SW seems to get along much better with Norton.

I'm fine w/Norton 2005 Internet Security. Never used 2004, since I had McAfee until they started their extortionist campaign of renewal windows popping up every 15 seconds. We'll never use them again.
