Solid State device to replace a spark gap

Hi<br>We have a circuit that uses a spark gap.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are there inexpensive solid-state devices that could be used instead. The component needs to breakover at about 20kv and have a significant life span (automotive application)

What is the energy level that must be discharged?&nbsp;&nbsp;Most solid state devices would be impractical unless specifically designed for the application.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the past, vacuum tubes could be applied, as in some radar components.&nbsp;&nbsp;Perhaps some piezo device can convert the electric energy to mechanical energy, at that voltage level.

The 20KV requirement is the killer.&nbsp;&nbsp;If this is the minimum, you are out of luck.&nbsp;&nbsp;If it is just what happens to be currently designed in thing, look at how it must function.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are devices that can operate into the 1-3 KV range. (cost is another factor hi KV = high cost)<br><br>I suggest looking at the design concept to rethink it, rather than just (blindly?) trying to replace a component.
