Hi,

I have 70 usgpm of slurry containing dust. Dust at 600 lb/hr is mixed with water. I'd like to know the solid concentration (weight) in %.

Assuming all the dust is solids.

70 gpm * 60 m/h = 4200 gph
4200 gph * 8.3 lb/gal = 34860 lbs/h
600 lbs/dust /(34860 lbs wter + 600 lbs dust) = 0.0169

0.0169 * 100 = dust concentration % by (total) weight = 1.69

Slurry (solid) concentrations are frequently expressed in mass per unit volume. In this case 70 (US)gpm = 4200 (US)gph. Then, the concentration would be 600 [÷] 4200 = 0.143 lb/(US)gal.

For a weight/weight basis convert the volume of the slurry to lb/hr by use of its density (lb/gal). Then the mass % is easy to calculate. If the density is not far apart from that of water, the concentration would be less than 1.7% w/w, assuming the density of the slurry > [ρ]water.

BTW, dust is sometimes conveniently defined as particles smaller than 1/16 mm (0.0025 inch) in diameter.
