Soil structure interaction is the gestalt of geotechnical engineering. I mean what's the value of knowing strength if the soil must strain 15 percent to realize that maximum value? If the soil truly has to strain that much to mobilize all that strength, can the structure handle that degree of deformation - conversely, will the structure limit such deformation? If the structure limits the soil's ability to deform, then what strength may be appropriate to design for this structure?
Horizontal loads on piles, stresses on retaining walls, structural deformations, etc. These are the topics of soil structure interaction.
