Soil Conductivity measurement

I am looking to build a soil conductivity meter. I am hoping in my spare time to build a unit to test the needs of plants to be fertilized. The goal would be a soil conductivity meter that is low-power and does not require maintenance often.

I was wondering if anyone has seen any application notes on such an item? I'll continue searching and report back if I come up with an application.

The only thing I have seen is a soil conductivity tests for grounding rods.

Soil conductivity meters are common. Unless you have something unique, try something else.
