Hi Eng-tips,

I have a question concerning the barrier loading requirements specified in SNZ HB 8630 (Tracks and Outdoor Visitor Structures).

Clause 3.6 outlines the "Ulitmate limit state for barriers" loading.

In clause 3.6.1, table 10 provides the "Basic live load" on the barrier of a variety of different structures.

Clause 3.6.2 provides a reduction factor for the basic live load on barriers.

For ULS loading, does the basic live load specified in Table 10 require upscaling by a factor of 1.5?

Cheers.

I believe for the ULS it is 1.2G and the Q they specify (as they call Q the factored live load), refer to clause 3.7 where it implies for ULS it is 1.2G+Q, no further factoring is required of the live load as I read it.

Note though you just need to be certain your structure falls within the scope of the standard, otherwise the design would need to take a more conventional approach using the 1170 standards and the appropriate material standard. Where for live loading on barriers the additional 1.5 load factor would be required with none of the reductions in the handbook. For example make sure your client is on board with using it if it's borderline... So if it all goes pear shaped as part of any review, its then their fault [bigsmile]
