Exactly. Turn off GRID.
... which is really 'snap to grid', an ancient cad feature, included for artists. Leave it off.

Maybe you're using Snap instead of ESnap. Check the bottom of your screen. I think Snap points go to grid whether visible or not. Esnaps go to endpts, quads, etc..
