Is a smoke control system required to pressurize smoke compartments created by a smoke barrier on a patient floor?
IBC seems to clearly identify when a Smoke Control System is required for Atriums and Underground Buildings. I have a I-2, High Rise renovation project that will have a smoke barrier created on a patient floor. IBC section 909 is stated to apply to only buildings that require smoke control systems per other sections of the code. It also has a subsection that requires smoke compartments to maintain a pressure relationship.
As the building does not require a Smoke Control System, I do not believe I need to comply with the subsection of 909 that requires smoke compartment pressurization. Currently, all ducts penetrating the barrier are designed to have smoke dampers that shut upon detection of smoke in the ductwork.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
