We're looking for a very small, 6 position connector.

A 6 pin mini DIN is too large (about twice the size that we want.)

The female portion of a typical RJ is also too big, and the male side is a bit wanky for this application.

Ideally, we'd like something akin to the very small USB connections on digital cameras, though we need 6 pins, and not 5.

The female side will mount to the plastic case, or be PC mounted. The male side will terminate the end of a cable.

We're assuming that we will need to make this a custom job, but would prefer something off the shelf.

Also we want to keep the cost as low as possible as this is for a consumer product.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Andy

I've invested this also recently and I agree, Hirose is a good choice. Their 3200 series rectangular connector has an 8-pin option if you don't mind a couple of extra pins.

Yea, Hirose is one of the key sources I've been looking at.

The ST series, while 10 position, is probably what we're going with.

I *really* like the MQ172 series, but it is only available in a 4 position version.

If I could find something like the MQ172 in a 6 position, I'd be really happy.

Thanks,

Andy

tuned: Thanks for the suggestion on the 3200 - it's ideal for the design, though a bit pricey for the client's business model... But nearly perfect in size - thanks, as I missed that one when I was first going through the Hirose site.

Try looking around at Samtec. We use a lot of their connectors and they are very small.
