sludge pump reliability

We have about 400 moyno (Robin Myers) downhole pumps for pumping out heavy crude from 1200 - 1500 feet. Availability 100%, only regular greasing of drive heads, and changing v-belts. Occasionaly changing of rotor and stator, but in most cases this is caused by well problems.
We also havo 4 mono (Dresser) pumps for pumping out oily water from a sump pit. Problem cases because dirt(grass & leaves) is always getting in. Maintenance intensive. Steven van Els

We have seen Moyno (r) pumps operating with excellent reliability in a variety of sludge applications. having said that, the real answer to your question lies in the details. "Sludge" can vary from a low solids organic slurry with little or no abrasion to a high solids, mineral laden severely abrasive material. The performance and longevity of the pump will depend greatly on the specific application. Being reliable for a particular application may not mean that the pump will last indefinitely without maintenance. There are several factors essential to getting a progressing cavity pump that will do the best job:
As with any pump, selecting the proper model and materials of construction are the keys. You should work with a knowledgable and experienced application engineer at the manufacturer or with an authorized distributor of progressing cavity pumps to ensure the right selection for your needs. Ask about their experience with a similar material and the guidelines for proper application. Be sure you are getting a pump with a heavy duty design and abrasion resistant rotor and stator materials suited to your sludge.
There are light duty design progressing cavity pumps available for low or no abrasion applications at low pressure. These are not suited to severe duty applications. Your best choice is a manufacturer that offers a range of progressing cavity pumps with designs suited to many different needs. Then you will not get a "one size fits all" solution.
Also consider the support and service available. Is there a local stocking distributor? Do they offer factory authorized service and do their sales people have formal factory training? Where are the parts manufactured and will they be readily available when needed?
